Frances Borden is a painter of small-scale portraits and has been a prizewinner in the BP Portrait Award three times (1996, 1998 and 2000), as well as the NatWest Prize for Art (1995 and 1996) and Hunting Art Prizes (1997 and 1999). In 2000, she won the Black Swan Prize for Art, and in 2012 The Wells Art Contemporary Prize. She has been the recipient of a Rootstein Hopkins Foundation Project Grant (2005) and a Grant for the Arts from the Arts Council of Great Britain (2005). She studied at Chelsea College of Art and Design.
