Working with drawings and paintings completed on location I develop ideas that express my relationship with the environment. These locations are repeatedly visited until sufficient information is recorded in sketchbooks and colour studies. Landscapes, seascapes and architecture form the main focus of my work. There is a presence in a particular location that is original and unique. I will try to use the early studies to develop paintings that reflect this concern. I like overlaying marks and working in texture and pattern on the surface of the painting. Compositions are often changed or amended to achieve the feel of a place. Sometimes I can achieve a subtle shift from opaque to transparent. Sometimes I can move from that which is transient to something more permanent and sometimes flatness gives way to depth and texture.
