Peter Newell

Peter Newell

Peter Newell is a painter of ships, harbours, quaysides and other subjects found at the edge of the sea. He studied at Exeter Art College and the Slade and worked as a sculptor for 25 years. When, for a variety of reasons, sculpture was no longer possible, Peter started painting. Initially making abstracts inspired by a workshop with Patrick Jones. On moving to Bideford, he found the quaysides along the Torridge stimulated ideas about composition, colour and detail. Painting in acrylic on canvas Peter synthesises strong composition with painterly applied detail, finding kinship with artists like Charles Sheeler.
