There have been two continuous threads intertwined throughout Ray’s life from an early age. One has been his love of art, and the other the natural world. Over the past three decades the wide-open spaces of sea, estuary and sky have been the mainspring of his mix media art, in particular the Exe Estuary and Dartmoor. For this latest series of paintings, he chose to work in the studio from quick sketches and memory, as opposed to his usual practice of painting en plein air. The new work is about the ‘spirit’ of the landscape rather than the landscape itself.
